Antibiotics are losing their effectiveness because of misuse and overuse.
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) occurs when bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites no longer respond to antimicrobial agents. As a result, infections become difficult or impossible to treat, increasing the risk of disease spread, severe illness and death.
During the 18th to the 24th November, healthcare professionals are coming together to raise awareness of this problem and help us all better use antibiotics.
Our Clinical Pharmacy team is leading our campaign with lots of activities including sharing posters, talking to patients and wearing blue to promote the cause.
Here’s what you can do to prevent antimicrobial resistance:
- Only take antibiotics and other antimicrobials when prescribed them
- Always follow the advice of your healthcare professional when using antibiotics and always finish the full course. Even if symptoms have stopped.
- Never share or use leftover antibiotics
- Use medicines responsibly
